Summer vacations to the mountains were never on my radar growing up. I loved watersports and flocked to beaches and lakes, leaving trips to the mountains for winter months.
The saying in Sun Valley goes, “I came for the winters and stayed for the summer’s”. Sun Valley Idaho in summer is nothing short of paradise.
Trails are Everywhere in Sun Valley!
It would be hard to find a residence within the Wood River valley that is over a mile to a trailhead. Most local trails quickly lose cell service as you ascend into the mountains. The wildflowers in June can be overwhelming and Sun Valley draws an impressive lineup of events over the summer months.
Fish, Hike, Swim, Bike, Eat and Relax
You may come for a vacation to Sun Valley without a plan or checklist and easily fill your days with activities. Fish the Big Wood River, spend an afternoon at Galena Lodge, explore an unnamed trail, hike to the Pioneer Cabin then refuel at any number of classy eateries in Ketchum and Sun Valley. Sun Valley Idaho in Summer could hardly disappoint.
Kirsten’s Summer Checklist:
You could find a summer to-do checklist just about anywhere. Summer in Sun Valley Here is my summer check-list for Sun Valley Idaho in summer. If you want to vacation like a local, here are some ideas.
Ketchum Alive Hosted by the City of Ketchum
Hosted by the City of Ketchum every Tuesday evening in Forest Service Park! June 28-August 16, 2022. Gather with friends, bring a chair and a picnic for an eclectic evening.
Redfish Lake outside Stanley, Idaho
One hour north of Ketchum lies one of the most beautiful lakes I have ever seen nestled just outside Stanley, Idaho within the Sawtooth mountains. Redfish Lake lodge has basic accommodations, a restaurant and a thriving beach scene with water sport rentals. Swimming, boating, hiking, relaxing, camping, climbing and mountain biking are the main attractions.
Fischer Creek Trail in Stanley Basin
If you are a mountain biker you must ride Fischer Creek. Located within the Stanley basin, get ready for high mountain vistas along a very well maintained single track. It is not a technical trail per se, but the epic views and high alpine meadows are sure to entertain you.
Dinner or Drinks on the Warfield Patio Downtown Ketchum
Outdoor summer dining is plentiful in the area, but Warfield’s second floor patio in the center of Ketchum is quite the place. Their cocktails are unique and the scene is vibrant.
Picnic with Friends at the Sun Valley Symphony
Every August the Sun Valley Symphony takes center stage. While you can purchase tickets in the bleachers, meeting friends for a picnic in the grass is my preference. Bring a blanket, some great food and drinks and you can’t go wrong!
High Alpine Wildflowers
My favorite months in Sun Valley are January and June. I try my best to avoid leaving during these months. In June, the snow has cleared from most high alpine trails and the wildflowers are on point. High alpine lupine fields are aburst with color and their fragrance along the trails can be nearly overwhelming.
Summer Evenings on the Big Wood River
July can bring some pretty hot days to the valley. I challenge you to find a private swimming hole on the Big Wood River. Trust me, there are plenty of them and they are an excellent way to spend a hot evening.
